Alexa peered through the windshield of the SUV and tried to figure out where the hell they were.
âWhich way did he go?â she asked Ryc. He had some residual dragon skills, like a clearer ability to see in the dark.
âThereâs a door recessed into the hedge.â
âWhat hedge?â Alexa grrd a little. âAll I see is a tight grove of trees and underbrush.â
Ryc pulled the truck off the road and behind a matching copse of trees opposite the one Pike had disappeared into. He shut off the truck and they climbed out. Alexa looked ruefully at her white sneakers. âI hope I donât blow it.â
Rycâs teeth flashed in the minimal moonlight. âWant me to mud them up?â
âNo! These are eighty dollar sneakers.â
âYou should have worn boots.â He sounded completely unsympathetic as he crossed the street ahead of her.
âI thought weâd be trudging around the city,â she whispered, ânot the woods.â
They moved silently through the trees hiding the hedge Ryc had spotted. It wasnât a square-trimmed border, but despite the overgrowth and invasion of vines, it had clearly been placed by humans rather than nature. Pikeâs car was parked in front of the door Ryc had watched him go through.
Ryc put his mouth close to her ear. âDo we have a tracker?â he breathed. Alexa grimaced and shook her head. Ryc shrugged and turned his attention to the gate. Alexa examined a box to the side of the door while her husband slid between the hedge and the wall. A quick look confirmed there was no alarm attached to the box itself, and it wasnât locked. She quietly tugged open the cover. Shit. The small container held a keypad, hand pad, and retinal scanner. She could bypass any of them, but it would take too much time to do all of them.
She shut the cover and turned. Ryc emerged from the hedge, and she joined him back at the street.
âSolid wall. Wired. No cameras that I can see.â
Alexa looked up at the top of the wall, about fifteen feet above their heads. âWeâre not getting in tonight.â
âNope. I think the only way we can get in undetected is to fly.â
They looked at each other, and Alexa grinned. âSamantha can fly.â
Ryc nodded and motioned for her to get into the truck. âThen letâs find her.â
